For Saturday play Virginia Tech and the Yankees on the Run Line.
I heard the same thing about LSU the other night, which I am hearing about the Hokies: don't overlook the opposition's defensive unit, and beware of the letdown factor. Then LSU went out and won in shutout fashion. Being this is the first game since some psycho went on a shooting rampage and then shot himself, and there's an expected calm that will overcome the campus when the Hokies destroy their first foe, I am banking on this being the game everything goes back to normal.
Ranked ninth in the nation, I like these Hokies to immediately build on last season's 10-3 finish by relying upon a stifling defense led by linebackers Vince Hall and Xavier Adibi. With these two pressuring the Pirates' backfield, it sets up nicely for cornerbacks Victor Harris and Brandon Flowers to disrupt the passing game with Krazy Glue-coverage. ECU could have tremendous issues after its quarterback, Rob Kass, was charged with driving while impaired, and will instead start sophomore Brett Clay, who hasn't thrown a football since high school.
On offense things will be balanced by returning quarterback Sean Glannon's strong arm, which should be well off with his top receivers back, that being Eddie Royal and Josh Morgan. These two combined for more than 940 receiving yards, 64 catches and seven touchdown receptions.
ECU coach Skip Holtz couldn't have put it any better: "We are walking into an absolute hornets' nest." Look for the Hokies to sting the Pirates here, as we lay an awfully big number, but come away unscathed.
Ian Kennedy cannot afford to do what Pat Hughes did yesterday – and that's blow it.
We'll play the Yanks on the Run Line, as Kennedy makes his Major League debut – a factor that has seen some of the best prices come in all season right here with The Great One.
Once again we side with a first-timer, as Kennedy has made the jump from Single-A, through the ranks of the minors all season and now with the big boys in pinstripes. The fiery right-hander was stellar in Triple-A, limiting batters to a .182 batting average, while producing a 2.08 ERA.
Look for the Bombers to provide him with the run support he'll need, as we oppose Edwin Jackson, who is 4-12 with a 5.51 ERA this season.
